LOW MOOR —In a move designed to assist students and accelerate learning, the Alleghany Highlands Public Schools Division is now offering Varsity Tutors for Schools.
Varsity Tutors will offer personalized instruction to students who are in need of additional academic support. The online service is designed to assist learning in a content-specific, one-on-one, virtual environment. Varsity Tutors for Schools available to all AHPS students, but high school students will likely be the primary users.
AHPS is offering Varsity Tutors in partnership with the Virginia Department of Education. VDOE is making Varsity Tutors available to all public school divisions in the Commonwealth during the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 school years. The service is being offered free of charge. It carries an estimated value of $80 million statewide.
AHPS students in need of tutoring assistance can access Varsity Tutors free of charge. It’s akin to a student raising their hand in a classroom to ask a teacher for assistance with solving a math problem, writing an essay, or learning vocabulary. With Varsity Tutors, students can reach out for assistance from home.
Varsity Tutors offers:
— 24/7 on-demand tutoring.
— On-demand essay review and coaching.
— Live enrichment classes, and SAT and ACT prep classes.
— Self-study courses.
— College and career readiness resources.
— Adaptive diagnostic tests.
— Recorded enrichment classes.
“Varsity Tutors can provide just-in-time help for high school students doing their homework or needing an essay reviewed. This can be a service that supports both students and families in completing homework assignments. We appreciate the work of our team in helping our community access this resource,” said Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson, leaders of AHPS.
AHPS instructional team members in secondary instruction and information technology worked to develop the local systems necessary to allow students access.
AHPS has provided students with access to Varsity Tutors through a link in students’ bookmark folders. Students can click the link and access Varsity Tutors through their AHPS Google account. Access is available to students in all grade levels, although the service may be particularly useful to high school students.
Parents with questions should contact the principal at the school their student attends.
The Alleghany Highlands Public Schools Division was created in July 2022 through the merger of Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center. The school division serves approximately 2,700 students, and it is jointly funded by Alleghany County and the City of Covington.
